During the TOTAL ECLIPSE of 22nd July 2009 it is essential to protect your EYES throughout the different phases of the TOTAL ECLIPSE.

Not wearing to look at a solar eclipse is the best way to get an indelible memory of the experiencein the form of permanent black spots caused by burns to the retina.

  We now know that solar radiation plays a part in the phenomenon of ageing of the lens and retina.
This process can bring on a cataract or macular degeneration.
The retina is a delicate light-sensitive membrane found at the back of the eyeball. The cells in the retina send messages in the form of pulses along the optic nerve to the brain.
The brain builds these pulses up into images, and that is how we "SEE".

The retina can be damaged by overexposure to invisible infra-red radiation emitted by the sun.
Because the burning caused is totally painless, it all happens without the person realising.
In order to provide the best vision possible the retina has no pain receptors, and it does not even have any blood vessels at its centre.
All one has to do is look at the sun for one minute to cause irreversible damage to this organ.
And worst of all, it is untreatable. Once it has been damaged, the retina cannot be repaired.
The effect is irreversible. It is not until a short while after the burn that we feel the harmful effects!
